Differentiation Strategy Essay

In this paper work we will talk about Differentiation Strategy. In contrast to the cost leadership strategy, implementation of a differentiation strategy means that value is provided to customers through the unique features and characteristics of a company’s products rather than by the lowest price. Because differentiated products satisfy customers’ unique needs or preferences, companies can charge premium prices for differentiated products. For the company to be able to outperform its competitors and earn above-average returns, the price charged for the differentiated product must exceed the cost of differentiation. In other words, the price charged must exceed total product cost. Because of this, the differentiated product’s premium prices generally exceed the low price of the standard product. Companies that follow a differentiation strategy concentrate or focus on product innovation and developing product features that customers value rather than on maintaining the lowest competitive price (as is the case for the cost leadership strategy). Products can be differentiated in a number of ways so that they stand apart from standardised products: superior quality unusual or unique features more responsive customer service rapid product innovation advanced technological features engineering design additional features an image of prestige or status For example Intel uses speed, innovation, and manufacturing techniques as bases of uniqueness. The company’s focus throughout its primary and secondary value-creating activities is on establishing the importance of quality, accuracy, speed, and responsiveness. The focus is also on understanding and meeting customers’ unique preferences and monitoring the speed, reliability, and quality of activities provided by others that interface with the company’s inbound and outbound logistics. |Differentiating Features That Raise the Performance a User Gets | |To enhance the performance a buyer gets from using its |Meet the buyer’s needs and requirements more completely, | |product/service, a company can incorporate features and |compared to competitors’ offerings. | |attributes that |Give buyers the option to add on or to upgrade later as new | |Provide buyers greater reliability, durability, convenience,|product versions come on the market. | |or ease of use. |Give buyers more flexibility to tailor their own products to| |Make the company’s product/service cleaner, safer, quieter, |the needs of their customers. | |or more maintenance-free than rival brands. |Do a better job of meeting the buyer’s future growth and | |Exceed environmental or regulatory standards. |expansion requirements. | Source: Adapted from Michael E. Porter, Competitive Advantage, (New York: Free Press, 1985).   However, companies following differentiation strategies cannot completely ignore costs and the need for minimal spending on process-related innovations. A company that successfully implements a differentiation strategy can earn above-average returns even when the five competitive forces are strong. Rivalry with Existing Competitors Achieving customer loyalty means differentiating products in ways that are meaningful to customers. Brand loyalty means that customers will be less sensitive to price increases. As long as the company satisfies the differentiated needs of loyal customers, it may be insulated from price-based competition. Bargaining Power of Buyers (Customers) Through meaningful differentiation, companies develop products that are considered unique. This uniqueness may insulate the company from competitive rivalry and reduce customer sensitivity to price increases (similar to the insulation from rivalry with  existing competitors). By satisfying customer preferences in ways that no competitor can, companies also are able to charge higher prices (because there are no comparable product alternatives). Bargaining Power of Suppliers Because the differentiator charges premium prices, they are somewhat insulated from suppliers’ price increases (as the differentiator can absorb a greater level of cost increases from powerful suppliers through its higher margins). Alternatively, because of lower price sensitivity by customers, differentiators may be able to raise prices to cover increased supplier-related costs. Because of the differentiator’s focus on product quality and responsiveness to customer preferences, suppliers also may be forced to provide differentiators with higher quality materials, components, or services. Potential Entrants The principal barrier to entry is customers’ loyalty to the uniquely differentiated brand. This means that a potential entrant must either overcome (or surpass) the uniqueness of existing products or provide similarly differentiated products at a lower price to increase customer value. Product Substitutes Brand loyalty may effectively insulate differentiated products from substitutes. Without brand loyalty, customers may switch to substitutes that offer similar features at a lower price or to products offering more attractive features at the same price. Like the cost leadership strategy, the differentiation strategy also carries risks.   Customers may decide that the cost of uniqueness is too high. In other words, the price differential between the standardised and differentiated product is too high. Perhaps the company provides a greater level of uniqueness than customers are willing to pay for. The company’s means of differentiation no longer provides value to customers. For instance, what is the value of prestige or exclusivity? And, how long will they last as customers become more  sophisticated? Customer learning may reduce the customer’s perception of the value of the company’s differentiation. Through experience, customers may learn that the extra price paid for a differentiated product no longer has the value that it once did. This loss of value through customer learning or changes in customer perceptions can be illustrated by the experiences of IBM. Initially, the IBM name on a personal computer signalled value to customers; however, clones soon challenged IBM’s pre-eminent position in the PC market. As customers learned that the clone machines offered similar features at lower prices, the value attached to the IBM brand name diminished and IBM’s sales continue to suffer. A fourth risk is concerned with counterfeiting. Increasingly, counterfeit goods (products that attempt to convey differentiated features to customers at significantly reduced prices) are a concern for many companies using the differentiated strategy. In the event of any of the above, differentiators are challenged to increase value to customers. This may mean reducing prices, adding product features without raising prices, or developing new efficiencies in its value chain of primary and secondary activities.

Hooters vs the EEOC

Is Hooters’ employee selection critical to the effective implementation of its strategy? Do the job specifications for Hooters restaurant servers have a discriminatory effect against male applicants? Does Hooters management appear to have a bias against males? Response: Hooters employee selection is critical to the effective Hooter’s primary image is that of sex appeal and the entire waitstaff is the reflection of the company’s image. Hooters main target audience is middle age men and the business sell wings by using the sex appeal of it’s servers. Hooters has a reputation of having only female waitress that are very attractive with little uniform. Even their logo resembles a female anatomy. Their whole business model is based on those principals. Majority of the customers go there to get served food and entertained by attractive waitress. Hooters is a major food retailer with 400 restaurants that employe thousands of people primarily women. These women are making a living with having a job at Hooters. Hooters has the right to hire only female waitress because that’s their ompany image and principal. Having a male waiter at Hooters just doesn’t mix with company image. Hooters will also loose a lot of customers if they integrate, because the majority of the customers go there for the female waitress. That’s what makes Hooters different from the other restaurants. There are a lot of restaurants that sell the same type foods. The customers have a lot of choices of restaurants but Hooters customers go there bec ause of the all girl attractive waitress. Hooters restaurant does not have a discriminatory against male applicants. They are not completely segregated company. They are not biased against male they can still have a career with Hooters. Hooters hires male applicants for managerial, cook and busboys positions. The management have to keep up to the company principal and image. So they are not allowed to hire any male waiters because it goes against the company image. Do you agree with Hooters’ position that female gender is a bona fide occupational qualification for the position of restaurant server? Do recent court decisions support management’s arguments? Response: I agree with Hooters’ position that female gender is a bona fide occupational qualification for the position of restaurant server. The company image and business strategy is based on the female waitresses. If you ask a Hooter customer, â€Å" what’s special about Hooters? † Their response will be about the attractive female waitress. Not about how good their burgers are. Hooters feeds both their customer’s mind and stomach. The court decisions does support the management’s arguments because they can not change their business strategy. Having male waiters will defiantly have a big impact on their business.

Mentors value young people’s ideas and honor their changing feelings and moods.

Divisions of Diet - Essay Example For underweight people, gaining weight is recommended. However, for those people that are already overweight, gaining more weight increases their risk to various diseases. When gaining weight, it is important that an individual sticks to healthy diet. Gaining weight should also be gradual until an individual achieves their ideal weight (Gabler 20). There are different types of food that might help an individual to gain weight in a healthy way. Foods such as chips, sweets, cakes, and other high calorie junk foods full of saturated fat and sugar only leads to the increase of body fat and not lean body mass. In fact, paying tips to the staff of the hotel and restaurant against services is the vogue of Europeans, but this vogue is not in the practices of Japanese. For example, there are no commuting costs, accommodation costs, and most of the course materials are often found online free of charge. Additionally, assorted costs like parking, fuel, and motor vehicle maintenance costs do not impact on the web-based learners (Tomei, 2010). As a result, the learner is able to save money that may be used for expensive workbooks as well as texts. The affordability of attending online classes may result in more people getting access to education, thus increasing the literacy levels. Proceeding further, Tomei (2010) argues that online classes enhance the opportunities to network. The Internet provides a platform where the student can interact with numerous other students across the globe. Composition 3 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Composition 3 - Essay Example The first of the reason that explains why the mood of the boss impacts the employees negatively is that the foul mood of the boss leads to creation of fear and anxiety to the employees (King, 2008). When the boss is in a foul mood and keeps on shouting to the employees and intimidating them in the workplace, employees become fearful of communicating with the boss and even explaining anything to him. This fear leads to anxiety which grows as the foul mood and the negative mood turns contagious to the employees. When the anxiety level of all employees is high, they fail to pay attention to their work. They keep on thinking of what the boss will think or say and hence end up with shady job which negatively affects the performance of the company in general. The mood of the boss according to (Goleman, Boyatzis and McKee, 2002) also affects the employees by creating stress and lack of job satisfaction. As mentioned earlier, fear by the employees leads to anxiety. If the bad mood by the boss continues or even elevates due to the reduction in productivity, it causes harsh comments from the boss who are demeaning and even leading to some employees crying. This eventually leads to creation of stress among the employees. When an individual is living in a stressing environment, the stress increases leading to more medical bills accumulating all of which are added expenses to the company. The stress will also cause the employees to miss work or reduce their performance in the workplace. The other reason that increases the stress levels of the employees is the lack of empathy by the boss who has bad mood. The boss only cares about himself and when it comes to personal issues of the employees, he withdraws, does not show any empathy at all. In order for employees to work well with their boss and even increase their work performance from the good environment of the workplace, the

3 idiots Reaction Paper Essay Example for Free

3 idiots Reaction Paper Essay Phunsuk Wangdu. This was a main character played by Aamir Khan in the movie 3 idiots, a famous Indian movie directed by Rajkumar Hirani. The story was basically about three engineering students who faced everyday life challenges together for their whole stay in college. They stayed in one room causing them to treat each other like a real family. Unfortunately, their institution was ruled by a heartless genius man who always believed in the thought that life is a race, one must compete to survive and also, he never cared about his students dying out of pressure through committing suicide. This ruler was a total perfectionist and had very high standards on everything, he wants everything to be under his control. While everyone was terrified following his authority, Phunsuk Wangdu dared to be different, well, he stayed as who he really was. His perspective in life was completely different from that of their institutions director. He was a very simple student and a total definite genius who applied the things he studied in the real world. And as the years went by, he showed that undeniably impossible things could possibly happen. His character had enlightened me so much and watching the whole movie for more than 2 hours gave me goosebumps. Putting your whole trust in God, sharing, helping and inspiring others, doing your best at all times and bringing positivity to everything things we need to survive and enjoy life. He once said that putting your trust to God wont be the solution to your problem but it will give you enough courage to face it. These are very simple lessons to keep in mind yet the most important ones to keep our life meaningful. Now i want myself to be like him in my own simple ways and prove people that happiness is the key to success. To sum it up, well have everything we need and want if we have God. And as he commonly said, ALL IS WELL.

School Choice Initiative Essay Example for Free

School Choice Initiative Essay Perceivably, the verbal communication in the school selection initiative is considerably astounding as that of any glitch any fairy tale might have played to offer the brood to their remorseful providence. Many critics have deliberately emphasized that the real intent of Proposition 174 revolves around the connotation that â€Å"All parents are hereby empowered to choose any school, public or private, for the education of their children . . . – concisely, that is not exactly how many tend to see the light of the thought. Although it may seemingly utter as that which is piously beneficial and helpful to the contemporary masses’ parents of a child in an inner-city institution, it is like giving the students a somewhat subliminal way of saying a that all shall get the passes towards the prestigious institutions as that where most popular icons earned their degree in college. In such case, the choice will not be dependent on the learner (child) not the parents. Private schools shall be given the prowess to decide upon who shall be admitted or not hence ‘public school’ children shall then be given the same chance (Nevins, 2001). †¢ It would bring up a tight and healthy competition thus commencing a challenge to public school system towards the aim for academic excellence. †¢ The state shall save 2% transfer rate from public schools since that education in private schools are cost-effective hence allotting more on the appropriation for several improvements such as parks, school libraries and other sort of the like. †¢ It shall offer families a genuine alternative to â€Å"all† levels of the society, the vouchers will give all the chance to get a glimpse of â€Å"standard† education. †¢ The school will get to choose those who are to be admitted in the school, with this, the students shall be challenged to earn good grades in high school to earn the reward. †¢ It will give rise to quality education not only for a limited few, but for all. Cause of the melamine

Cause of the melamine What is the cause of the melamine incident which triggered many countries? The melamine incident was initially centred on Sanlu, a Hebei-based dairy company, whose melamine-contaminated baby milk powder had sickened a growing number of infants. Nationwide inspections later found that milk powder from 21 dairy companies including Mengniu and Yili are also contaminated. Two giant processing companies — Mengniu Dairy Group Co. and Yili Industrial Group Co. — control nearly 60 percent of the total market for milk, yogurt and other dairy products, according to Beijing Orient Agribusiness Consultant Co. But in the past three years, prices for feed, fuel and other costs rose — feed by as much as 30 percent. Further pressures came last year when Beijing enacted price controls to tame double-digit inflation for food. Milk collectors found themselves squeezed between the farmers asking for more money and the processors who demanded that prices be held down, said Chen Lianfang of Orient Agribusiness. That squeeze gave suppliers incentives to tamper with the raw milk, watering it down and then adding ingredients, said Chen. Melamine, a relatively cheap binding agent used in plastics, fertilizer, and as a flame retardant, is rich in nitrogen, fooling widely used tests that check for protein. When mixed with formaldehyde, it dissolves in water. Authorities say middlemen apparently added melamine to milk they collected from farmers to sell to large dairy companies. The suppliers are accused of watering down the milk and then adding the nitrogen-rich chemical to make the milk seem higher in protein when tested. Protein tests often simply measure nitrogen levels. Melamine can cause kidney stones and lead to kidney failure in larger doses. Babies whom consumed the contaminated milk began suffering from kidney problems caused by the melamine and doctors were blaming the powdered milk. The scandal first came to light in milk powder that killed four infants and sickened more than six thousand others across China spread to liquid milk. Many countries like Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Malaysia have already banned all milk products from China while a number of countries have announced recalls of a variety of goods suspected of being spiked. Singapore banned the import and sale of all Chinese milk products after some were removed from stores in Hong Kong. In late October 2008, CHINAS Health Ministry said six babies may have died after consuming tainted milk powder, up from a previous official toll of three. It also announced a sixfold increase in its tally of infants sickened in the scandal to nearly 300,000. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26859570/page/2/ http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D94064AO0show_article=1catnum=2 http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNews/World/Story/STIStory_281658.html http://www.newsnet.co.zw/index.php?nID=13877 Why China and Malaysia milk products are the only ones being banned? They found out that the diary products contained melamine too. SINGAPORE: The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) has instructed importers and retailers to withdraw all Malaysia-made Julies brand biscuits from the shelves. This comes after AVA detected the industrial chemical melamine in 12 Julies biscuit products imported from Malaysia. AVA says there are 25 types of Julies biscuits sold in Singapore, but as a precaution, it decides to recall all Julies biscuits. AVA advises consumers who have bought affected biscuits not to eat them. AVAs tests also included various types of biscuits under the major brands of Khong Guan and Meiji as well as other traditional biscuits that are manufactured in Singapore. Melamine has not been detected in these products. AVA says Lotte Koalas March Cocoa Chocolate Biscuit and Hello Kitty Strawberry Cream Filled Biscuit have been recalled since 19 September. The tainted products will be destroyed under AVAs supervision. As of 24 October, 3,200 types of milk and milk products, chocolates, biscuits, non-dairy creamers and other products imported from more than 40 countries have been taken for laboratory analysis to check for melamine. Along with five other biscuit products from Malaysia, the 12 affected Julies products form the first batch of non-China goods found tainted with melamine in Singapore since the worldwide food scandal started last month. The AVA said that the contamination in the Malaysian biscuits seems to have stemmed from tainted ammonium bicarbonate, which is used as a raising agent in confectionery. Since the AVAs latest announcement, manufacturers and importers have been scrambling to check whether their products contain leavening agents from China. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/385183/1/.html Singapores AVA suspended the import of all milk and milk products from China and instructed retailers and importers to recall such products. Three products were found to contain melamine â€Å"White Rabbit Creamy Candy†, â€Å"Yili Brand Choice Dairy Fruit Bar Yogurt† and â€Å"Dutch Lady† strawberry-flavoured milk. Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) has suspended the import and sale of all milk and milk products from China with immediate effect as samples of Singapore stocks of two made-in-China milk products have been found to be tainted with the potentially deadly chemical melamine. http://livinginsingaporetoday.com/686/ava-has-suspended-the-import-and-sale-of-all-milk-and-milk-products-from-china-with-immediate-effect/ SINGAPORE Singapore on Friday suspended the import and sale of all milk and milk products from China after local tests found samples containing the potentially deadly industrial chemical melamine. The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) said in a statement that its tests found melamine in two samples of Yili brand iced yoghurt. They also found the chemical in the Dutch Lady brand of strawberry flavoured milk manufactured in China, AVA said. Those products have been removed from market shelves and will be destroyed, the agency said. In the aftermath of Chinas milk contamination, the Agri—Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA), Singapores processed and primary food inspectorate, recently discovered that White Rabbit Creamy Candy, again manufactured in China, also contains melamine. White Rabbit is the third dairy confectionary from China which showed melamine content in AVAs laboratory tests. Yili Brand, a fruit bar yogurt and Dutch Lady, a strawberry-flavored milk have been earlier taken out of stores after they have been found to contain melamine. http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/world/09/19/08/singapore-suspends-china-milk-imports-deadly-chemical-found-yoghurt During this melamine incident, what actions did AVA (Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority) took, to prevent and minimize cases from happening in Singapore? As a precautionary measure, AVA is also suspending the import and sale of all milk and milk products from China with immediate effect, it said. Retailers and importers have been instructed to recall these products and these products will be withheld from sale until they have cleared the necessary tests. AVA said local food manufacturers have also been instructed to stop using milk and milk products from China as ingredients until the agency completes its probe. Consumers are also advised not to consume any milk and milk products from China pending AVAs investigations, it said. The AVA confirmed it would allow the import of Julies biscuits once it is sure they are safe. Singapores AVA said it advised consumers on Wednesday about a recall of the Yili yoghurt product after tests in Hong Kong found it contaminated with the chemical, which can be lethal if consumed in large amounts. http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/world/09/19/08/singapore-suspends-china-milk-imports-deadly-chemical-found-yoghurt Because melamine is an industry chemical not approved for use in food manufacture. The amount of melamine found in the ten products above is higher than what can be considered as naturally occurring. It is clear that melamine has been artificially added to adulterate these products. As melamine contamination was already uncovered in several products, AVA has suspended the import and sale of all milk and milk products from China since 19 September 2008. Retailers and importers have been instructed to recall these products and these products will be withheld from sale until such products are safe for consumption. Anyone finding such products still on sale should inform AVA immediately. There have been recent advertisements by some food companies assuring consumers on the safety of their milk or milk products manufactured in China, claiming that the milk ingredients in such products came from other countries. Companies should not make such claims unless they have been verified with AVA. AVA would like to reiterate that as long as the milk or milk products are produced in China, such products are suspended from import and sale in Singapore. AVA will not hesitate to take enforcement actions against any company who violates this ban. http://docs.google.com/gview?a=vq=cache:zicP4VhuGu8J:www.ava.gov.sg/NR/rdonlyres/5DD7CAF8-82EB-4BDF-AD50-83A556546488/22147/AVApressreleasefor30Sepappvd_website_021008.pdf+singapore+ava+moh+china+milkhl=engl=sg Local food manufacturers have also been instructed to cease the use of milk and milk products from China as ingredients. Consignments which have newly arrived or are on the way will also be withheld from sale. If the consumers have already bought the contaminated products or any other milk or milk products from China, they are advised not to consume them. Consumers should read the labels of the products to check the country of origin. If the milk or milk products are from China, consumers should not consume them. http://gardenclinic.net/gardenkids/article/Melamine.pdf Miscellaneous It has become apparent in recent days that people in China have been deliberately watering down the milk to cut costs, then adding in the melamine to boost the protein content and make the product look normal. Singapore is an island nation which imports virtually all its food.

Bob Hope: Hollywoods Brightest Star :: Essays Papers

Bob Hope: Hollywood's Brightest Star This PBS documentary of Bob Hope as an entertainer was well done. It looks at Bob's contributions as an actor, comedian, dancer and humanitarian. The film's footage, from the early 1900's to present, is revealing to the eras of Bob Hope's career. It takes you through Bob's career in vaudeville, Broadway, radio, movies, television and live performances. As narrator Les Brown Jr. states " Bob Hope is an American icon and the only entertainer to be # 1 in all facets of the entertainment field". This documentary is proof that this statement is true. The narrator starts off with a biography of Bob Hope, while showing scenes of the early 1900's. Bob was born in 1903 in England, who migrated to the United States with his parents and six brothers in 1907 and settled in Cleveland, Ohio. By age six, Bob was already doing impersonations of Charlie Chaplin. Bob took dancing lessons from a vaudeville entertainer named John Root and was soon entering talent contests all over town. At age eighteen, Bob had started a dance act with his girl friend Millie Rosequest, but it did not last long. Bob soon teamed up with another dancer named George Burd. They took their act to New York and worked at a lot of vaudeville show houses. It was at one of these places where Bob was asked to do the announcing in between acts. Bob's comedic talent and acts took hold and lead to the beginning of his solo career. In less than five years Bob had become the most sought after talent and the # 1 hit in the vaudeville circuit. Bob's success in vaudeville caught the eye of many Broadway producers. He was soon signed to do a Broadway show called Roberta. This lead to many more offers and to Bob doing a year tour with the Ziegfield Follies. Bob was now considered to be the hottest act around and was being recruited by radio stations and movie studios. In 1937, Bob signed a twenty-six week contract with NBC radio to do the Woodbury Soap Show. Since Bob was such a big hit NBC gave him his own radio show, The Bob Hope Show. Bob would do a monologue to start the show, then bring out other actors and perform skits.

Software Piracy in India and the Developed World :: Software Computers Technology Essays

Software Piracy in India and the Developed World Introduction: Software Piracy in India Software is one of the easiest and a very lucrative medium to steal. The copies made are as good as the original software and can be made quickly in large quantities. This makes it very difficult to effectively enforce anti-piracy laws, as the officials cannot raid each and every home in search of illegal copies of copyrighted software. In India, with a population of over 1 billion, effective enforcement of anti-piracy laws is a ponderous task. The government of India possesses neither the will nor the finances to dedicate a chunk of its budget to enforcing copyright infringement laws. Another problem is that to control expenditure of monitoring and convicting such a huge number of offenders is a complicated and time consuming process. Latest figures show that the Personal Computer market in India is rocketing skywards. In the quarter ending December 31st, 2003, 800,000 units were sold. Out of these 55 percent of the computer sales were of regional brands and unbranded systems. It should be noted that not all of these brands conform to software copyright laws as in the United States and Europe, or even in India. By the end of March 2004, an estimated 3 million personal computers are expected to sell. 2 The regional brands are the most responsible for propagating software piracy. In order to sell the computers cheap, pirated versions of software are installed on all machines sold. It can easily be deduced how much loss software piracy will cause the industry in the recent future. The use of illegal or copied versions of software costs the worldwide software industry more than 13 Billion Dollars a year in revenues, out of which 1.96 billion dollars are lost in the US alone, which has a software piracy rate of 23 percent. In some East-Asian, Latin American and European countries, 95 percent of the software used is pirated. So, India is better off but still has a long way to go in the fight against software piracy. India is unarguably one of the software hubs of the world, yet software piracy is rampant in this country. The software piracy rate in India is nearly 65 percent. No illegal activity of this scale can survive unless and until it has the support or involvement of a large number of users. The more concrete manner in which software piracy can be precluded is to pro-actively involve the public in the anti-piracy initiative.

Werner Heisenberg :: essays research papers

Werner Heisenberg One cannot fully appreciate the work of Werner Heisenberg unless one examines his contributions in the context of the time in which he lived. Werner Karl Heisenberg was born in Wuerzburg, Germany, on December 5, 1901, and grew up in academic surroundings, in a household devoted to the humanities. His father was a professor at the University of Munich and undoubtedly greatly influenced young Werner, who was a student at the Maximilian Gymnasium. Heisenberg had the opportunity to work with many of the top physicists in the world including Niels Bohr and Max Born. Like many of the top physicists of the time Heisenberg received his doctorate at an early age. In Heisenberg's case he received it at the young age of twenty three. Heisenberg was not just a researcher. He was also a professor and author. During his career he taught at many prestigious universities, including the Universities of Leipzig, Goettingen, and Berlin. He also wrote many important books including, Physical Principles of the Quantum Theory, Cosmic Radiation, Physics and Philosophy, and Introduction to the Unified Theory of Elementary Particles. In 1932 he won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work in Quantum Mechanics. With the Nazi's in power, and World War two on the horizon it was inevitable that his German heritage would play a crucial role in his career. Before Germany's blitzkrieg on Poland Heisenberg decided to make one final visit of his friends in the West. Many tried to convince him to stay and accept a professorship at Columbia, but Heisenberg declined. He felt that it was his duty to preserve the foundation of science in Germany during the war. He also believed that by staying in Germany during the war, he could help individual German scientists. In fact, he did offer jobs to Jewish scientists when they were fired from their posts at other universities. As time passed, Heisenberg found that he was powerless to protect his friends. Heisenberg himself was personally attacked, and his appointment at the University of Munich was blocked. For over a year Heisenberg was attacked in the SS newspaper, which referred to him as a "white Jew." The attack became so threatening that Heisenberg's mother, who had a slight connection to Himmler's family, wrote to Himmler's mother asking Himmler to intercede. Himmler personally cleared Heisenberg of the charges leveled against him a year later, but he was told to study science and avoid discussing scientists. The strain of the investigation surely affected Heisenberg's creativity. During the war Heisenberg worked on the German A-bomb project along with a number of other German scientists.

The seat of government was shifted in 1999 from Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya, due to the overcrowding and congestion in the Kuala Lumpur areas.Nevertheless,  Kuala Lumpur  remains Malaysia's national capital, being the seat of the  King  and  Parliament, as well as the country's commercial and financial centre. Putrajaya was the brainchild of former Prime Minister  Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad. In 2001, Putrajaya became Malaysia's third  Federal Territory  after Kuala Lumpur and  Labuan. Named after the first  Malaysian Prime Minister,  Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, the city is situated within the  Multimedia Super Corridor, beside the also newly developed  Cyberjaya.In  Malay/Sanskrit, the words â€Å"putra† or â€Å"putera† means â€Å"prince† or â€Å"male child† (â€Å"girl child† is called â€Å"Putri† in  Sanskrit), and â€Å"jaya† means â€Å"success† or â€Å"victory†. The development of Putrajaya started in early 1990s, and today major landmarks are completed and the population is expected to grow bigger. Putrajaya, which was originally  Prang Besar   , was opened in 1918 as Air Hitam by the British. Its original land space was 800 acres (3. 2  km2), which was later expanded to 8,000 acres (32  km2). Prang Besar later expanded and merged with its surrounding estates such as Estet Raja Alang, Estet Galloway and Estet Bukit Prang. The vision to have a new Federal Government Administrative Centre to replace Kuala Lumpur as the administrative capital emerged in the late 1980s, during the tenure of Malaysia's 4th Prime Minister,  Dr. Mahathir Bin Mohamad. The new city was proposed to be located between Kuala Lumpur and the new  KL International Airport (KLIA). The Federal government negotiated with the state of Selan gor on the prospect of another Federal Territory and in the mid-1990s, the Federal government paid a substantial amount of money to Selangor for approximately 11,320 acres (45.   km2) of land in Prang Besar, Selangor. As a result of this land purchase, the state of Selangor now completely surrounds two Federal Territories within its borders, namely Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. Planned as a garden and  intelligent city, 38% of the area is reserved for green spaces by emphasising the enhancement of natural landscape. A network of open spaces and wide boulevards were incorporated to the plan. Construction began in August 1995 and it was Malaysia's biggest project and one of Southeast Asia's largest with estimated final cost of US$ 8. billion. The entire project was designed and constructed by Malaysian companies with only 10% of the materials imported. The  Asian Financial Crisis  of 1997/1998 had somewhat slowed the development of Putrajaya. In 1999, 300 staff members of the Pr ime Minister's office moved to Putrajaya and the remaining government servants moved in 2005. On 1 February 2001 Tun Dr. Mahathir declared Putrajaya as a Federal Territory with the ceremony of handing over Putrajaya township from the Selangor state authorities. In 2002, a  high speed rail  link called  KLIA Transit  was opened, linking Putrajaya to both Kuala Lumpur and KL International Airport in  Sepang. However, construction of thePutrajaya Monorail  which was intended to be the city's metro system, was suspended due to costs. One of the monorail suspension bridges in Putrajaya remains unused. In 2007, the population of Putrajaya was estimated to be over 30,000, which comprised mainly government servants. ————————————————- Putra Square From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Redirected from  Putrajaya Independence Square) This article  does not  cite   any  references or sources.
